Your wedding

So here it is again, the wedding season is surrounding us with its usual flurry of fraught and fantastic brides.  Keeping a level head is important coming up to the last few weeks before your wedding – this is generally the time when some brides tend to ‘lose it’.  Having been part of thousands of weddings over the last seven years, my advice to you is this – keep a focus on why the wedding is happening, remember that you and he are the important bits of the wedding and that sharing a common goal is key.  Get lots of sleep, if you can, and yes I know this sounds clichéd, but get a small notebook and write down ANYTHING that is on your mind before you go to bed and park it there until the morning.  Everything seems more manageable when you are not tired.  Eat well.  No-one likes to see a scrawny bride.

If you are worried about being the centre of attention and everyone looking at you going down the aisle, remember everyone is there because you invited them and they are there because they love and support you and are there to give you that support on your wedding day.

Things will happen; brides are late, it can rain, flower girls don’t want to put on their dresses – it is part of the memories that you will remember with fondness in the future.  These are the things that make us human and it is human to worry about perfection, but it will be perfect in its own way – your way.

Everything is always 100 times better than one ever imagines on their wedding day, so take heart, a deep breath and look forward to the most fantastic day of your life.

Wedding Cakes

Expert tips on choosing a wedding cake from The Wee Bakery

One of the memories people will take home from your special day will, of course, be ‘the dress’. However, the second-most important aspect of your day – will be the effect you create with your cake. As with most decisions to do with your wedding, the number of wedding cake options can seem endless, and it can be overwhelming knowing where to start! It’s best to select your cake designer as early as possible in your wedding planning schedule. You won’t need to choose your cake straight away, but good bakers get booked up well in advance, especially during the summer months.

Choosing a Cake Designer:
Look for a cake designer who specialises in the style of cake that you’re looking for. If you have your heart set on chocolate cake – find a chocolate expert, if it’s a cupcake tower you want – find a baker who specialises in the tiny treats! Have a look on their websites to give you a feel for their style, but don’t worry if you can’t find exactly what you’re after, as a lot of cake companies will be happy to work with you to create a bespoke design.
When choosing your designer, ask to see examples of the cakes they have already made – and be sure to go along for a taster session. Afterall, the cake needs to taste as good as it looks! The suggestion of eating cake may even be enough to get the groom involved in this part of the wedding planning!
It’s essential to select the cake designer that will best bring your wedding cake vision to life. The most successful wedding cakes are the result of good communication between you and your cake designer, so make sure you choose someone you trust and can develop a good relationship with.
Choosing your cake
When it comes to the style of your cake, take inspiration from your colour scheme, venue and your own personality. :
Wedding cakes come in a mind boggling variety of different sizes, shapes, colours and flavours. They range from the traditional tiered fruit cake to a modern cupcake tower in a variety of flavours and designs. When it comes to the cake base, while fruit cake is the traditional choice, there are many other options such as lemon cake, carrot cake, and, of course, chocolate. As for the topping for your special cake – you need to consider whether to have marzipan, royal icing, buttercream, fondant, or chocolate, to name but a few. With regards to the design, you can choose from: fresh flowers or fruit, sugarpaste flowers, edible images, ribbons, chocolate, hearts, monograms of the bride and grooms initials - the options are truly endless!!
Other unique options for your cake include serving your cake in the evening, or instead of a dessert. Serve it with ice cream, chocolate sauce, or even a fruit coulis.
As with most wedding options, the final decision usually comes down to price! Wedding cakes can vary wildly in price. Decide on a type and style of cake that is within your budget. Tell your chosen cake designer right from the start what your budget is, and they should be able to create a design that is perfect for you.
When choosing a design for your cake, be creative. The final design should reflect the bride and groom’s personality and uniqueness. Whether it be a traditional fruit cake with flowers, a Croquembouche of profiteroles, miniature cheesecakes or a beautiful cascading tower of cupcakes – let your imagination run wild – and have fun choosing!
