It's not until you have a problem with it that you even think of your roof. It sits there quietly, doing its job of keeping wind rain and weather out of your house, but the minute something goes wrong (typically a leak after it's rained), your roof becomes the most important part of your house.

If something does go wrong and you find water seeping into your home, you need to call on the services of your local roofer. They're not hard to find – a simple internet search for a roofing contractor in your area with being a load of local roofers up. All you have to do is choose one.

But what should you be looking for when picking a roofer to perform roof repairs on your house or building? Well, the first thing we would suggest is that, whoever you plan to use, get them to visit your property. That way, you'll be able to determine their level of knowledge and get a gut feel for the quality of their roofing work. If they turn up in a well liveried van, showing the name of their firm, you'll know you're not dealing with a fly-by-night roofer (and there are plenty of them, believe me).

As your roofing specialist if he is a member of any governing body, how many years he has been in the roofing business, how many people work for the company and, if it's a big job you're planning, if they have done any similar kind of work on other roofs in the area.

Also, be selective who you choose based on their area of expertise. You'll find that some roofers only deal with slating, roof tiling and flat roofing in built up felt. This is sufficient for most home owners, but if you want something unusual, like EPDM (rubber) roofing, or fibreglass flat roofing, then you may have to do a more specific search.

But it's not just roofing that a roofer will deal with. You may call them for guttering, fascias, soffits and other uPVC products that sit around the edge of your roof. Finally, a roofer will be able to repair or re-point your chimney as well as fit roof windows (sometimes known as roof lights or skylights)
